This course will be of benefit to anyone who would like to have a basic understanding of mental health issues.
At the end of this half-day workshop you will be able to:
- Explain why it is important to be aware of mental health issues
- Define “mental health” and “mental health problems”
- Understand the mental health continuum
- List common signs and symptoms
- Describe protective and risk factors
- Identify what a “mental health crisis” might be
- Provide examples of how to ask someone about self-harm and suicide

Understanding self-harm
This course will be of benefit to anyone who would like to increase their understanding of issues relating to self-harm, particularly those working in education, health, social, voluntary and youth services.
At the end of this 1-day workshop you will be able to:
- Understand the self-harm/self-nurture continuum
- Identify common motives and myths surrounding self-harm
- List some helpful and unhelpful short and long term responses
- List alternative ways of coping other than self harm
- Be aware of professional help available
- Recognise your own needs and ways to look after yourself when working with people who self-harm
This will be of benefit to anyone who wants to improve their communication skills and confidence.
At the end of this 1-day workshop you will be able to:
- Recognise the different styles of interacting in the workplace
- Identify the situations at work which you find difficult
- Reflect on the reasons why you find these situations uncomfortable
- List strategies to help you develop a more confident communication style
- Choose to practice strategies for assertive verbal and non-verbal behaviour
Although this course relates mainly to the workplace, many of the issues and strategies will be transferrable to other areas of your life.
